“As you navigate through the rest of your life, be open to collaboration. Other people and other people’s ideas are often better than your own. Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you, spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.” Amy Poehler
It has been one full month since I last walked out of the cage door of my former place of employment. It has been 4 weeks since I joyously celebrated with my colleagues the completion of nearly 20 years of service to my country in the capacity of an attorney for the federal government. It has been 30 days since I became the captain of a new vessel and started to acclimate to the new waters that would surround me on this part of my journey. And, if truth be told, while liberating, new beginnings are never easy.
Yet, having chosen to sail my own ship, fearing that now I am out in the middle of the ocean all alone, I have learned a very important lesson in this one month, 4 weeks, or 30 days- it is time to embrace my group of creative collaborators as I am one who will never embrace the forward movement unaccompanied by my magical ones.
That is correct. One of the most beautiful gifts from this new beginning is that my life continues to be assisted by other people who challenge and inspire me to be better, think outside the box and see possibilities that I never even thought were there. When the waters get rough and the sea appears angry, it is the experience of all involved that will conspire to do what is necessary to keep the ship afloat and help see you through.
This past month, once I started to realize and surrender to the notion that I was not abandoned in these new waters, that my friends made over the years were still my friends, that my confidantes I entrusted my stories with were still there, I could collaborate with them to navigate forward. The gift in this awareness was an effortless ease into the process as I took on a different role. A sort of gentle release from the dock that I had attached myself to for so long. Fundraising goals were met with the help of others, amazing events further unfolded with the help of others, even my own writing catapulted to a new height with the help of others. And most importantly, as I opened myself up to the beautiful sea before me, my fear of standing alone fell away because I was surrounded by my brothers and sisters. And with a strong sense of knowing, this new adventure became rather exciting as the expanse of creative collaboration materializes allowing all involved to shine brighter and brighter standing side by side as the sun rises over the horizon on this beautiful new day!
