Beware of the Golden Cage!

“The human brain loves novelty. An unfamiliar, unusual, or unexpected element in a presentation intrigues an audience, jolts them out of their preconceived notions, and quickly gives them a new way of looking at the world.”

Carmine Gallo

Standing rigidly in place. Fixed. Not able to yield. Convinced by yourself and others that this is all there is. This is the best opportunity that you will have. Benefits, a knowing, comfortable.  Yet, when you look around at those shiny golden walls of the cage you have built for yourself, does this  feel more and more restrictive over time than freeing?  As you feel the golden walls close in, aren’t you curious as to what lies on the other side?

Seeing new people join the fray who possess the excitement and joy that you once had. Wondering where and when your own enthusiasm left the building without you.  When you were young, your spirit of adventure coursed through your veins. You woke up in the morning ready to connect to daily life through all of your senses. Your curiosity would take you on little journeys, only to be brought back from the edge by those who kept watch over you. There was no cage, there was no box, there was no limit to what you were able to do. Roll, crawl, walk, run. You did it all. Nothing held you back.

I remember well, a certain wise Judge would pontificate that over time, we all must beware of the golden cage.  Those golden handcuffs that look so enticing in that they offer security, however, when voluntarily put on, we anchor ourselves to the shore. Missing out on all the opportunities that life offers for we convince ourselves that this is it.  “Remember this”, he would say, “we all have the keys to free ourselves at anytime.”

You and I were born with a deep desire to understand the world around us. Roll, crawl, walk, run. A pattern that repeats itself over and over again as you evolve and grow. Stay curious. Balance the rest and recharge with the venturing out and exploration, feed your curiosity and find a new way of looking at the world. Shake things up a little. See what you and the world are made of.  Risk well. Live the life you were born to live. One that has you unlocking your golden handcuffs, leaving the safety of your golden cage to set out to experience the magic that beckons to you, the magic that is found waiting for you underneath the golden sun (not in the confines of a cage).  And like the little baby whose confidence is unspoiled, set out and believe in your abilities to truly experience life. No handcuffs, no cage, all wonderful you!
