BOOK CLUB- December Picks

Meg’s Book Club introduces up and coming debut authors – one of my favorite things! For December introducing Deborah K. Shepherd and C.V. Shaw!

So Happy Together

DEBORAH K. SHEPHERD

Author of So Happy Together,  a newspaper reporter, then a social worker, and now a later-in-life writer.

Set in the sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll ‘60s  when drama students Caro Mills and Peter MacKinley were kooky, colorful and inseparable, and in the suburban ‘80s, when Caro’s creative spark has been quenched to serve the needs of her husband, Jack, and their children, So Happy Together explores the conundrum of love and sexual attraction, creativity and family responsibilities, and what happens when they are out of sync. It is a story of missed opportunities, the tantalizing possibility of second chances, and what we leave behind, carry forward, and settle for when we choose. It sits in that raw, messy, confounding and beautiful place where love resides.

Inspiration Over thirty years ago, I was going through a divorce and wrote to keep myself sane. I wrote this book at night, after my kids had gone to bed, on a word processor on the kitchen table of a ramshackle house in the Hudson Valley. I sent it out to one publisher, it was rejected, so I figured it was garbage and put it in a box in the back of my closet, then sealed the box, which moved with me from upstate New York to New Jersey, and finally to Maine. A couple of years ago, I started a new novel and my (second) husband reminded me of the manuscript stashed in the closet. I pulled it out, read it, and decided it wasn’t so bad after all. Four drafts later, it was accepted for publication, and now it’s a real book between two covers, and ready to make its debut in the world.

Order Details The book will be published by She Writes Press on April 20, 2021, but is available for pre-order wherever you buy books, especially in local, independent bookstores that could really use our support.

The Spell

C.V. SHAW

Author of The Spell, her debut fiction fantasy novel. She LOVES to make up stories. She loves the world of magic and still gets excited to watch Mary Poppins. She is a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and a Quantum Energy Medicine practitioner. She also teaches Mindscape, a course that teaches you how to use the full potential of your mind.

The Spell is set in the sixteenth-century England, and it is about a royal family whose world is turned upside down when an archer shoots an arrow at the very young Princess Isabella. King Maurice becomes lost in an enchanted forest in his quest to find the mysterious archer, there, he becomes bewitched by a mysterious old lady and her granddaughter who use potions to keep him captive in their cottage while pretending to offer hospitality.  The king’s attempts to escape continue to fail. Meanwhile Queen Lilac, convinced that the arrow is cursed becomes obsessed with reversing the spell that plagues the young princess with strange ills and has caused the king’s disappearance. The queen does not hesitate to go to any measure to reverse the spell consulting seers and doers of the supernatural to save her daughter and find the missing king.

Inspiration I was daydreaming about a castle on the other side of a forest I was admiring during a trip. Originally, it was going to be a poem about what I was imagining, but it played out like a movie and the pen just kept writing.  I became enamored with some of the characters…and seven months and 240 pages later… The Spell was born.

Order Details The Spell became available May 26, 2020 and is now available wherever books are sold.
