Gratitude begins in the heart and then dovetails into behavior. It almost always makes you willing to be of service, which is where the joy resides.
~Anne Lamott, American novelist, nonfiction writer, and author of Help, Thanks, Wow
If gratitude is a habit, then you must practice it each and every day. In your mind or out loud, you must repeat, again and again, “Thank you, thank you, thank you” until it rolls off the tongue like a beautiful operetta. Repetition of appreciation allows the mind and soul to refocus your life on the blessings rather than the hardships. This process of ingraining gratitude into every fiber of your being becomes radical especially during the discomfort, sadness, or strife. There is spiritual empowerment the moment gratitude takes over. Even if life deals you a particularly difficult hand—today, yesterday, or tomorrow—when you pay attention to gratitude, you are liberated from heaviness and delivered into the light. Gratitude for everything wakes up the heart muscle to feel love. Radical gratitude encourages you to be grateful even for the bad! When you allow yourself to believe that something beautiful resides in the darkness, you will repeat again and again, “Thank you, thank you, thank you.” This habit of loving-kindness takes that feeling of gratitude and allows you to pay it forward in service to others as well. It is when you open up to serve that joy is truly born. The gratitude habit will guide you to a place of pure bliss if you let it. And that has been the purpose of this journey since the first day!
